New Zealand in December

Is December a good time to visit New Zealand?

Early December (1–15) is excellent: warm summer conditions, long days, all Great Walks open, and prices still at shoulder-season levels. Mid-to-late December is peak season: New Zealand school holidays begin around 15 December, Christmas and Boxing Day fill hotels, and prices jump 30–50%. Boxing Day Racing at Ellerslie and Summer in the Square events make the festive period genuinely celebratory. Book accommodation 3–4 months ahead for the holiday period; early December can often be booked 6–8 weeks out.

Christmas in summer — and two very different fortnights

December splits cleanly into two distinct travel experiences. The first two weeks (1–15 December) offer some of the finest travel conditions of the year: warm, long summer days, all major attractions and Great Walks fully operational, and prices that have risen only modestly from November’s shoulder rates. The sea is warming, the vineyards are in full green leaf, and the country has the anticipatory energy of a summer that is just properly beginning.

From mid-December, New Zealand school holidays begin and the atmosphere shifts. Families flood the campgrounds, highways fill with campervans, Queenstown hotels post their highest rates of the year, and beach towns transform. Christmas in New Zealand is midsummer — barbecues on the beach, pohutukawa trees in scarlet bloom (the “NZ Christmas tree”), and outdoor concerts. It’s genuinely festive and warm, but logistically demanding. Boxing Day Racing at Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland is a major social event; Wellington’s Summer in the Square programmes start; Interislander and Bluebridge ferry bookings for the holiday fortnight fill months ahead.

The summer solstice falls on or around 22 December — nearly 15 hours of daylight in Auckland, close to 16 in Queenstown. The long evenings are extraordinary.

Weather: real numbers, not the brochure

Auckland and Northland: 22–25°C days, 15–17°C nights. Daylight 14.5–15 hours. Sea temperature at the Bay of Islands: 20–22°C — excellent swimming. December is reliably warm with brief afternoon storms possible. The Bay of Islands in early December has a perfect combination of warmth and pre-Christmas quiet.

Rotorua and Central North Island: 20–25°C days. The thermal parks are in full summer operation. Taupo lake temperature 19–21°C — warm for summer water sports and lake swimming. Tongariro Alpine Crossing in full summer conditions.

Wellington: 17–21°C days. Still windy but genuinely warm. Christmas events on the waterfront make the city festive and pleasant.

Marlborough and Nelson: 22–26°C, excellent sunshine. The Abel Tasman sea temperature is 18–19°C. Nelson in December is one of the most pleasant small-city experiences in New Zealand — warm, relaxed, good food, and the Waimea Estuary at high tide is stunning.

Queenstown and Central Otago: 22–26°C days, 12–16°C overnight. All ski fields are closed for the season. The lakes are warm enough for swimming. The Gibbston Valley vineyards are in full leaf and fruit-setting mode. December sunsets over Lake Wakatipu at 9:30pm are extraordinary.

Fiordland: Wetter than average December rainfall. Milford Sound’s Sutherland Falls are in full summer flow. The Milford Road is fully operational. December brings more walkers to Fiordland than any other month — the Milford and Routeburn tracks are at their most crowded.

West Coast and Glaciers: December is one of the better months for glacier helicopter flights — weather windows are more frequent than in winter, though the West Coast never stops being wet. Franz Josef and Fox Glacier helicopter tours operate multiple daily departures when weather permits.

Best things to do in December

Early December: the Tongariro Alpine Crossing at its best — December offers the Crossing at prime summer conditions. The crater lakes are at their most vivid turquoise, the views of Mt Ngauruhoe (Mordor in the films) are unobstructed, and the walking hours are maximum. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing premium guided experience is worth considering if it’s your first time — the guide explains the volcanic geology, Maori significance of the mountains, and spots wildlife that independent walkers routinely miss.

Bay of Islands Christmas sailing — the Bay of Islands in early December, before the holiday crowds, is one of the finest sailing environments in the world. Warm water, reliable northerlies, and 140 islands to explore. The Bay of Islands day sailing by catamaran from Paihia covers the Hole in the Rock and the outer islands with swimming stops. Book before December 15 to avoid holiday crowds and price increases.

Franz Josef Glacier helicopter tours — the glacier experience is one of the non-negotiable South Island highlights for summer visitors. The Franz Josef Glacier helicopter with alpine landing puts you down on the neve field 2,600m above sea level with a 360-degree view of the Southern Alps. December is the most reliable weather window of the year for these flights. Book flexible (weather-dependent) and allow at least 2 nights in Franz Josef for a successful flight.

Queenstown adventure and wine — all adventure activities are running in December, the days are long enough to do an early bungy, an afternoon jet boat, and still be at a vineyard for late-afternoon tastings. The Central Otago wine tour from Queenstown is at its best when the vineyards are in full summer leaf. Gibbston Valley in December is warm, beautiful, and the tastings include Pinot Noirs approaching their best.

Milford Sound Christmas cruise — the Milford Sound experience in December is at maximum scale: full waterfalls, green rainforest, dolphins, seals, and the best light of the year. A Milford Sound overnight cruise with water activities allows you to have the fiord essentially to yourself after the day cruise boats depart in the afternoon — kayaking and swimming at the base of Mitre Peak. Worth booking months ahead for December.

Pohutukawa coast (Northland and Coromandel) — the pohutukawa (the New Zealand Christmas tree) blooms in spectacular crimson along the coast in December. The Coromandel Peninsula’s pohutukawa-lined bays in full bloom against turquoise water is one of the country’s most distinctly New Zealand summer images. Combine with Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove for a definitive Coromandel December day.

What to avoid in December

Last-minute holiday period bookings. Campgrounds, mid-range hotels, and Great Walk huts for the Christmas–New Year period (20 December to 5 January) fill completely. If you’re planning a Christmas-period New Zealand visit and haven’t booked by October, your choices will be limited and expensive.

Driving the Milford Road on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Peak traffic on this single-lane-in-sections road combined with impatient holiday drivers creates genuine accident risk. If Milford is on your Christmas itinerary, drive on 23 December or 26 December.

Christmas closing for restaurants and services. Christmas Day (25 December) and Boxing Day (26 December) see many restaurants and some service businesses closed in smaller towns. Supermarkets typically close Christmas Day. Plan your provisions in advance if you’re in a smaller South Island town over Christmas.

Underestimating booking difficulty for the Interislander ferry. The Wellington–Picton ferry crossing at Christmas and New Year is the most oversubscribed in the year. Campervans especially face a weeks-long wait for available sailings if they haven’t pre-booked. For December holiday crossings, book in August.

Crowds and prices in December

December pricing is split: shoulder in early December, peak from mid-month:

Early December (1–15):

  • Mid-range hotel (Queenstown): NZD 200–300 / USD 120–180 / EUR 110–165
  • Mid-range hotel (Christchurch, Nelson): NZD 150–200 / USD 90–120 / EUR 83–110
  • Hostel dorm: NZD 38–58 / USD 23–35 / EUR 21–32

Late December (15–31, holiday pricing):

  • Mid-range hotel (Queenstown): NZD 300–500 / USD 180–300 / EUR 166–275
  • Mid-range hotel (Bay of Islands): NZD 280–420 / USD 168–252 / EUR 154–231
  • Hostel dorm (Queenstown): NZD 55–80 / USD 33–48 / EUR 30–44
  • Milford Sound overnight cruise: NZD 320–420 / USD 192–252 / EUR 176–231 per person

Booking lead time for December holiday period: Great Walk huts (Milford, Christmas week) — book in June. Queenstown hotels (23–28 December) — book in September. Interislander ferry (Christmas period, campervan) — book in August.

Best regions in December

Bay of Islands (early December) is the perfect pre-Christmas destination — warm, beautiful, uncrowded by holiday standards, with sailing, dolphin encounters, and the Waitangi Treaty Grounds all accessible. The pohutukawa are blooming along the coastal roads.

Queenstown (all December) — the adventure capital is at its summer peak. Everything operates. Long days mean you can pack in an extraordinary amount. Christmas Eve in Queenstown has a festive atmosphere that’s hard to replicate — outdoor concerts, markets, and the Remarkables lit pink by the sunset.

Milford Sound and Fiordland — the most popular month on the Great Walks. If you’re doing the Milford Track in December, you pre-booked in June. If not, the day cruise from Te Anau or the scenic flight are the alternatives. See the Milford Sound guide for all options.

Coromandel and Bay of Plenty (early December) — the pohutukawa coast before Christmas crowds is exceptional. Cathedral Cove on a warm early-December morning, with fewer than 20 people in the bay, is one of those genuinely unforgettable New Zealand moments.

December weather hacks

UV index is at its annual maximum in December (12–14 — extreme). SPF 50 minimum, reapplied every 2 hours outdoors. New Zealand’s December sun is significantly more intense than equivalent latitudes in the northern hemisphere due to the southern hemisphere ozone hole thinning. Start Great Walk days early — temperatures and walker volumes on the Milford and Routeburn both peak mid-morning. Mountain weather in December can change within an hour; carry a warm layer and waterproof even on sunny days. Plan afternoon cloud buildup into your Tongariro Crossing timing — mornings are reliably clearer.

Frequently asked questions about visiting in December

Is Christmas a good time to visit New Zealand?

It depends entirely on your tolerance for crowds and your budget. Christmas in New Zealand is genuinely special — midsummer, festive, pohutukawa in bloom, outdoor events. But it is also the most expensive and crowded period of the year. If you have a choice, early December (1–15) gives almost identical conditions at 30–40% lower prices and without the booking stress of the holiday peak.

What happens on Boxing Day in New Zealand?

Boxing Day (26 December) is a public holiday. Auckland’s Ellerslie Racecourse hosts the Boxing Day Racing — a major social event, not just for racing fans. Summer concerts begin in Auckland and Wellington. Beach towns are at their busiest. Many Kiwis treat Boxing Day as the first day of summer holidays when everything is fully operational.

How much should I budget per day in December?

Early December: NZD 110–150 / USD 66–90 / EUR 61–83 per person (budget); NZD 460–700 / USD 276–420 / EUR 253–385 per couple (mid-range). Holiday period: add 30–50% across all categories. Luxury lodge rates over Christmas can reach NZD 2,000–3,500 / USD 1,200–2,100 / EUR 1,100–1,925 per couple per night at places like Eichardt’s in Queenstown.

Can I still book the Great Walks for December?

For Christmas–New Year weeks (20 December to 5 January), independent Great Walk huts are almost certainly sold out if you’re planning in November. Check DOC’s cancellation list for last-minute openings. Guided walk options (Ultimate Hikes for Milford and Routeburn) may have spaces and are worth contacting directly. For the first two weeks of December, hut availability is significantly better.

Is December or January better?

For most international visitors arriving in December, the first half of December beats January on value. The second half of December rivals January’s crowds and prices. If your dates are flexible, early December or February are both superior to January for the combination of conditions and value.

What is the pohutukawa tree?

The pohutukawa (Metrosideros excelsa) is a coastal tree endemic to northern New Zealand that blooms with crimson flowers in November–December. Nicknamed the NZ Christmas tree, pohutukawa-lined bays with their scarlet canopy against blue water are one of the most distinctly New Zealand summer images. They grow wild along the Coromandel, Bay of Islands, and Northland coasts. The best specimens are at Cathedral Cove, Cape Reinga, and the Coromandel coastal reserves.

Should I rent a campervan in December?

For December travel, a campervan works well in the first 2 weeks but the holiday period (15 December to 10 January) is logistically demanding: campgrounds fill completely, freedom camping restrictions are enforced more strictly, and the Interislander ferry has very limited campervan berths available without months of advance booking. A car plus accommodation is often more flexible for holiday-period travel.

How to combine December travel with the rest of New Zealand

Early December works beautifully with a 14-day itinerary starting in Auckland and ending in Queenstown — the trip catches the Bay of Islands pohutukawa, the Coromandel warmth, the Tongariro Crossing at summer peak, and Queenstown’s adventure activities before the holiday crowd surge. For holiday-period visitors, the 7-day South Island itinerary gives the core highlights with less driving. Cross-reference the January guide to understand what the Christmas-period crowds look like through to the new year, and the November guide if early booking considerations are pushing you toward the shoulder season.
