Franz Josef vs Fox Glacier

Franz Josef vs Fox Glacier

Should I visit Franz Josef or Fox Glacier?

Franz Josef for more facilities, more operators and a more polished visitor experience. Fox Glacier for Lake Matheson (best mountain reflection in New Zealand), a quieter town, and the twin-glacier heli-flight. If you're driving the West Coast, visit both — they're only 25 minutes apart.

The honest verdict

Franz Josef and Fox Glacier are 25 kilometres apart on the West Coast highway. Most travelers driving between Wanaka and the Punakaiki/Greymouth area pass both. The question of which to choose is largely the question of whether you’re stopping at one or both.

The honest context first: both glaciers have retreated significantly. Franz Josef lost approximately 3 km of length since 2008; Fox lost around 2.7 km. Valley-floor walking to the glacier face is no longer possible at either — the retreating ice has left an unstable gravel valley that DOC has closed for safety. The only way to get on either glacier is by helicopter. This changes the economics significantly: heli-hiking is the primary glacier activity at both.

For town facilities and activity operators: Franz Josef wins. For natural beauty of the surrounding landscape: Fox Glacier (Lake Matheson is one of the most photographed views in New Zealand). For an all-day experience: the twin-glacier helicopter flight covers both.

When Franz Josef wins

You want more options. Franz Josef has the most operators, the most heli-hiking slots, and the widest range of accommodation. If you’re arriving without a reservation or want flexibility, Franz Josef is better-equipped to handle it.

You want the wildlife centre. The West Coast Wildlife Centre in Franz Josef has a genuine conservation programme — they hatch kiwi eggs in controlled conditions and release juveniles. Close-up encounters with kiwi chicks are possible. Entry NZD 35–50 / USD 21–30 / EUR 19–28. West Coast Wildlife Centre entry ticket.

You want the full-day glacier experience. Franz Josef’s heli-hiking operators have been operating the longest and have the best safety record. 2.5-hour heli-hike with helicopter transfer (NZD 459 / USD 275 / EUR 252) is the flagship experience — helicopter to the glacier, guided walk on ice with crampons and ice axes, spectacular views.

You’re arriving from Greymouth / Hokitika. Franz Josef is the first stop southbound on the West Coast. Most travelers arriving from the north (TranzAlpine to Greymouth, then driving south) hit Franz Josef first — the natural order.

You want a lake without the 5am wake-up. Lake Mapourika (5 km north of Franz Josef) is beautiful for kayaking and morning reflections. 2-hour scenic Lake Mapourika cruise is a gentle alternative or addition to the glacier visit.

When Fox Glacier wins

Lake Matheson is the main reason. The Lake Matheson reflection — Mt Cook and Mt Tasman perfectly reflected in a mirror-calm dark lake surrounded by kahikatea forest — is consistently rated one of the top photographs in New Zealand. The 45-minute circuit walk gets you to the main reflection viewpoint. Best in the hour after sunrise (calm winds, no other walkers). If you’re a photographer, Lake Matheson is worth basing your Fox Glacier stop around rather than the glacier itself.

You want a quieter town. Fox Glacier township is smaller and considerably more peaceful than Franz Josef. If you’re driving the West Coast for the wilderness, Fox Glacier’s sleepy character fits the theme better.

You want the twin-glacier flight. Several operators offer a helicopter flight covering both Fox and Franz Josef glaciers — a 35-minute circuit that gives aerial perspective on both systems and the Mt Cook massif beyond. Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers helicopter flight with snow landing covers both glaciers in a single flight with a glacier landing.

You’re arriving from Haast Pass / Queenstown. Fox Glacier is the first stop northbound from Haast. If you’re driving from Wanaka or Queenstown via Haast Pass (one of the great scenic drives), Fox is the natural first stop.

The heli-hike — what you actually do

Both glaciers offer essentially the same heli-hiking product. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Safety briefing at operator base (30 minutes)
  2. Helicopter flight to the glacier neve — 3–5 minutes in the air, landing on the ice field high above the terminal face
  3. Guided walk of 1.5–2.5 hours on the glacier, depending on conditions and package
  4. Ice formations — crevasses, ice caves, blue-ice seracs — all genuinely spectacular
  5. Helicopter return

Price range: NZD 459–620 / USD 275–372 / EUR 252–341 at Franz Josef; NZD 395–580 / USD 237–348 / EUR 217–319 at Fox. Weight limits apply (typically under 120 kg). Minimum ages vary by operator (usually 4–8 years).

Booking essential: flights are weather-dependent and frequently rescheduled. Book the first available slot in your visit and have a same-day or next-day backup booked. Glacier cloud forms rapidly and can cancel flights at short notice — the West Coast is one of the rainiest regions in New Zealand.

What they share

Both glaciers descend from the Southern Alps through temperate rainforest to near sea level — one of the only places on earth where glaciers exist so close to sea level and surrounded by jungle rather than tundra. The approach drives (up the glacier valleys) are beautiful even if the face itself requires a helicopter. Both areas have good birdlife — kea (alpine parrots) are common near the glacier environments.

Lake Matheson: the non-negotiable Fox Glacier addition

Lake Matheson is a glacially-formed lake 5 km from Fox Glacier township. The 45-minute circuit walk (easy, flat, suitable for all fitness levels) leads through kahikatea and rimu forest to a viewing platform where Mt Cook (3,724m) and Mt Tasman (3,497m) are reflected in the lake’s dark water on calm mornings. The best light is 30–60 minutes after sunrise. The “View of Views” platform is the main stop; continue to “Reflection Island” for a second angle.

Do not skip Lake Matheson if you’re in Fox Glacier, regardless of whether you’ve done the glacier heli-hike. It takes 45 minutes and costs nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Can you walk on either glacier without a helicopter?

No. Valley-floor access has been closed by DOC at both glaciers as the retreating ice left unstable moraine. The only way onto the ice surface is by helicopter (heli-hike) or helicopter only (scenic flight with snow landing). The DOC glacier lookout walks at both glaciers are still accessible and give views of the terminal face from a safe distance — worth doing as a free addition.

How long should I spend at each glacier?

Half a day each is sufficient if you’re driving through. Factor: 1 hour at the glacier lookout + 1.5 hours wildlife centre (Franz Josef) or Lake Matheson (Fox) + 2.5 hours if doing the heli-hike (plus possible waiting time for weather). Overnight at one or both is recommended — weather can delay flights, and arriving with a buffer day is sensible.

What if it’s raining?

The heli-hike cancels in low cloud. It rains frequently on the West Coast — plan for weather flexibility. The wildlife centre (Franz Josef) and Lake Matheson (Fox) are worth visiting even in rain.

Is the heli-hike worth the cost?

For most visitors, yes — if the budget allows. It’s the only way to stand on a Southern Alps glacier at close quarters, and the ice formations at the landing zones are genuinely extraordinary. For those where the budget doesn’t allow, the lookout walks and Lake Matheson are free and excellent.
