Hot water in the Southern Alps

Hanmer Springs is New Zealand’s premier alpine spa town — a small village in a broad basin surrounded by forested ridges and the Lewis Pass ranges, built around a geothermal spring that has been providing hot water for public use since 1883. The thermal complex is genuinely hot (38–42°C in most pools) and genuinely pleasant: pools of varying temperatures, a lazy river, private pools, slides for children, and enough square metres to absorb the weekend crowds from Christchurch without feeling unbearable.

The village itself is compact and cheerful — largely oriented toward the thermal complex, with a strip of cafes, restaurants, and accommodation within easy walking distance. It attracts weekend day-trippers from Christchurch (135 km, 1.5 hours) and serves as a convenient overnight stop on the Kaikoura to Christchurch or Picton route.

Beyond the pools, Hanmer Springs has developed a reasonable adventure activity offering: bungy jumping over the Waiau River gorge, jet boating and rafting on the Waiau, and mountain biking through the Hanmer Forest.

What to do in Hanmer Springs

Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools and Spa: The main attraction and the reason most people come. Outdoor pools range from 28°C (cooler pool) to 42°C (the hottest soak). The complex includes private pools, a rock pool, a sulphur pool (therapeutic, genuinely hot), and several public pools. The Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools Single Entry Ticket covers unlimited access to all public pools; NZD 26–32 / USD 16–19 / EUR 14–18 for adults, less for children. Private pool bookings (30-minute sessions) are additional and worth booking in advance. The Hanmer Springs Thermal Pools Single or Return Entry Ticket is the flexible option if staying overnight.

Waiau Gorge rafting: The Waiau River below Hanmer Springs runs through a narrow gorge with grade 2–3 rapids, accessible by jet boat or raft. The Hanmer Springs Waiau Gorge Rafting Tour is a half-day adventure; NZD 95–130 / USD 57–78 / EUR 52–72. Suitable for families with older children (typically 8+ years).

Thrillseekers Canyon adventures: At the Waiau River bridge 7 km from the village, Thrillseekers runs bungy jumping (35 metres over the gorge), swing, and jet boat. The bridge bungy is one of the few water-touch bungys in New Zealand: at low water conditions the jumper skims the surface. The jet boat through the gorge is also popular. Bungy NZD 130–160 / USD 78–96 / EUR 72–88; jet boat NZD 75–95 / USD 45–57 / EUR 41–52.

Hanmer Forest mountain biking: The exotic forest plantation surrounding the village has an extensive mountain bike network — around 80 km of trails ranging from beginner-friendly to black diamond. Bike rentals from the village; trail maps at the information centre.

Conical Hill walk: A 45-minute return walk from the village through the forest plantation to the summit of Conical Hill, with panoramic views over the village and the surrounding ranges. Free.

Mt Lyford alpine resort: 40 km from Hanmer Springs, Mt Lyford offers skiing and snowboarding (winter only, typically June to October). A smaller resort than the main Canterbury ski areas but good for day skiing without the drive to Christchurch. Day pass NZD 90–120 / USD 54–72 / EUR 50–66.

Day trip from Christchurch or Kaikoura

Hanmer Springs is a natural day trip from Christchurch (135 km) or a useful stop-off on the Kaikoura-Christchurch drive (Hanmer is about 45 minutes off the main route via Lewis Pass, adding 1.5 hours to the total journey). From Kaikoura, Hanmer Springs via Waiau is 100 km and 1.5 hours.

The From Christchurch Kaikoura Day Tour with Whale Watching combined with a Hanmer stop makes a long but rewarding full day from Christchurch.

  • Worth it: The thermal pools (NZD 26–32 / USD 16–19 / EUR 14–18) — some of the best value soaking in New Zealand, genuinely hot

  • Splurge: Heritage Hanmer Springs spa package with accommodation, pools access, and in-room treatments (NZD 400–650 / USD 240–390 / EUR 220–358 per couple) — legitimate relaxation without leaving the hotel grounds

How to fit Hanmer Springs into your itinerary

Hanmer Springs is best as a day trip or an overnight within a larger South Island itinerary. The most common structures:

Christchurch day trip: Leave Christchurch by 9am, arrive Hanmer by 10:30am, thermal pools for 2–3 hours, lunch, rafting or forest walk, return Christchurch by 7pm.

Kaikoura to Christchurch via Hanmer: The Lewis Pass route (SH7) from Kaikoura connects to Hanmer Springs; add 1.5 hours to the Kaikoura-Christchurch journey for a thermal pool stop. Worth it if you have the time.

Nelson to Christchurch via Hanmer: The Lewis Pass drive from Nelson passes directly through Hanmer Springs, making it the natural lunch and soak stop before continuing to Christchurch.

On a 14-day New Zealand itinerary, Hanmer is most useful as a rest stop between the Kaikoura whale watching and the Christchurch-Lake Tekapo leg.

Frequently asked questions about Hanmer Springs

Is Hanmer Springs worth visiting in winter?

Yes, arguably more so than summer. The mountain setting with snow on the ranges, the cold air outside the pools, and the steam rising from the warm water creates an atmosphere that doesn’t exist in summer. Mt Lyford skiing adds an activity option. Fewer day-trippers from Christchurch.

Are the Hanmer Springs pools suitable for children?

Very much so. The complex has a dedicated slide and children’s pool area, a lazy river, and several pool temperatures appropriate for families. Children under 5 enter free. The private pools are ideal for families who want their own space.

Is there a DOC campsite near Hanmer Springs?

There are several DOC campsites in the Lewis Pass area nearby (Marble Hill, St James Walkway access), but the Hanmer Springs village itself is best served by the TOP 10 Holiday Park. The DOC St James Walkway begins at Lake Guyon, 45 km from Hanmer.
